In accordance with evidence-based practices, Reinforcement Procedures MUST be implemented before considering the application of Punishment Procedures. Simply put, if Punishment Procedures are deemed necessary following a thorough evidence-based assessment, they will be applied in conjunction with FUNCTIONALLY EQUIVALENT REINFORCEMENT and an APPROPRIATE SCHEDULE OF REINFORCEMENT.

We should always concentrate on building skills, rapport and the confidence of our children rather than focusing on suppressing behaviors. Remember, every behaviour is a form of communication and they serve functions. It’s more productive to zero in on what you want to see instead of focusing on what you don’t want to see.
